If
you are a great facilitator, you’ve probably experienced
the frustration of not having enough time to help children and
adolescents understand complex family issues. The Family Dynamics
Mobile, developed by family therapist Stan Rowett, is a tool specifically
designed to help students bridge the gap between personal experiences
and conceptual understandings.
“One of
the most vivid
teaching tools I have ever used
in my 27 years as an educator.”
– Dan Marker, Ph.D
Vice President, Behavioral Health Institute
A Chance to Change Foundation (Oklahoma City, OK)
By shifting the mobile’s components, counselors
and educators can graphically demonstrate how the chemical dependency
of one family member destroys the balance of the family and how other
family members change roles, adopting survival behaviors to compensate
for the chemically dependent person’s actions.
The chief enabler becomes super responsible, for example:
the family hero becomes helpful, the scapegoat rebels, the lost child
withdraws, and the mascot uses humor to survive.
